Student Volunteer Week   Monday 20th – Sunday 26th February 2012
Student Volunteer Week can benefit sport in Lincolnshire

Sports clubs and organisations in Lincolnshire can benefit from Student Volunteer Week, which is celebrated next week across the UK.

Thousands of students are being encouraged to volunteer their time to help charities and organisations across Lincolnshire from Monday 20th – Sunday 28th February 2012.

Janet Inman, Chief Executive of Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, thinks that sport can benefit as a result: “Sport relies heavily on volunteers; parents, athletes, individuals giving up their time to support sport across the UK. Student Volunteer Week provides a perfect opportunity to link students in your area at local schools, colleges and the University, to sports clubs and organisations in Lincolnshire.”

Lincolnshire boasts a host of sports volunteering programmes ideal for students across the county.

Sport Makers is a national Sport England programme which aims to recruit 548 new volunteers in Lincolnshire over the next two years. Anyone aged 16 plus can sign up to the programme for free and give something back to the local community.

Lizzie Couling, Workforce Development Manager at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “There are lots of benefits to students who volunteer in sport; by gaining new skills they are building their CV, and by working with local clubs or organisations they are giving something back to their local area. Sport Makers is a great way to get involved with sports volunteering, and I hope students across Lincolnshire get involved.”

Sport Makers is inspired by the London 2012 Games and hopes to encourage more young people to volunteer in sport. For more information visit www.sportmakers.co.uk or call Lizzie on 01522 585 580

Sports coaches utilise resources at Lincolnshire libraries

Sports coaches have borrowed over 400 resources from Lincolnshire Libraries in the past six months thanks to a partnership between the Lincolnshire Coaches Network and Lincolnshire Library Services.

Coaching stock including sport specific resources, training principles and coaching have proved very popular with sports coaches and activity instructors across the county.

The most popular loans included Leadbetters Quick Tips; the very best short lessons to fix any part of your golf game, Running Well; run, smart, run faster, avoid injuries and enjoy it more, and Go Ski.

Lizzie Couling, Workforce Development Manager at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “The resources available at Lincolnshire Libraries are proving very popular with our coaches. It is a great tool for coaches, teachers and volunteers; books like these are often very expensive to buy so this partnership allows coaches to still receive the information, but at a reduced cost.”

All coaching stock is hosted at Lincoln Central Library, but can be transferred to other Lincolnshire libraries when required. There is a loan charge of 25p for self-loan, or 50p if loans are carried out by library staff members.

For more information about what resources are available to coaches in Lincolnshire, or the Lincolnshire Coaches Network, contact Lizzie on 01522 585 580 or lizzie.couling@lincolnshiresports.co.uk

Replace your medicine with a dose of exercise

What medicine can help you lose weight, sleep better, reduce aches and pains, is cheap and has no negative side effects? Exercise.

People in Lincolnshire who have medical conditions which may benefit from exercise are being encouraged to speak to their local GP about what’s on offer in their area.

Every district in Lincolnshire offers Exercise Referral; a programme funded by NHS Lincolnshire and the Health and Wellbeing Fund, and managed by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership.

Exercise Referral is a 12 week programme of low, or no, cost physical activity with your very own exercise programme, tailored to improve your quality of life.

Sarah Ferneyhough, Physical Activity Manager at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said:

“Around 3,000 people are being referred to the programme every year; receiving guidance and support to become more active. Participants are eligible for subsidised rates at leisure centres as well as lots of information on how to improve their help.

“We want to raise awareness of Exercise Referral so that more people in Lincolnshire can ask their GP about how it can benefit them.”

Exercise Referral programmes currently take place at 19 facilities across the county with on-going programmes so participants can start at any time.

One member of the Exercise Referral programme said: “The staff were very supportive and encouraged me; I now have a positive outlook on life.”

To be eligible to take part in an exercise referral scheme, participants must have a medical condition such as: Coronary Heart Disease; Cardiovascular Disease; Stroke; High blood pressure (hypertension), high cholesterol and risk factors for CHD; Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes; Obesity; Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; Depression, anxiety, stress, or other mental health problems; Learning disabilities; Osteoarthritis; Musculo skeletal problems, such as joint or back problems; Overweight pregnant women; Cancer; Epilepsy or Degenerative diseases.

New sports strategy aims to increase number of young people playing sport

A new sports strategy launched last week by Sport England highlights their main of increasing the number of young people aged 14 – 25 years who play sport once per week.

£1 billion of National and Exchequer funding will be invested in young people from 2012 – 17 under Sport England’s Youth Strategy, which was launched on Tuesday 10th January 2012 by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media, Olympics and Sport, Jeremy Hunt MP.

Jennie Price, Chief Executive of Sport England, said: “In 2017, five years after the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, we want to have transformed sport in England so that playing sport becomes a lifelong habit for more people and a regular choice for the majority.”

To encourage more people to play sport, the strategy highlights investments of £150 million in the School Games up to 2015, £160 million investment in facilities to upgrade and build new sports facilities and a £450 million investment into National Governing Bodies for Sport over the next five years.

The Strategy aims to build a lasting legacy of competitive sport in schools, improve links between schools and community sports clubs, work with National Governing Bodies for Sport to focus on youth participation, invest in facilities and create links between communities and the voluntary sector.

Chief Executive of Lincolnshire Sports Partnership Janet Inman said:
“The launch of Sport England’s Strategy for 2012 – 2017 provides a great insight into how sport will develop in the country over the next five years. We are delighted that more emphasis will be placed on encouraging children and young people aged 14 – 25 years to take part in more sport, and that Sport England will invest again in facilities across the country.”

Every secondary school in Lincolnshire will be offered a community sport club on its site with a direct link to one or more National Governing Bodies for Sport, depending on the local clubs in that area, and all secondary schools, who wish to do so, will be supported to open up, or keep open, their sports facilities for local community use, and at least a third of these secondary schools will receive additional funding to make this happen.

Three quarters of the student population aged 16 – 24 years (over 900,000 young people) will get a chance to take up a new sport or continue playing a sport they enjoyed in school or college.

Janet added: “We do not know how much funding Lincolnshire will receive at this moment in time, but we are confident that people in Lincolnshire will benefit from the Strategy.”

Sports coaches and volunteers can utilise a range of new resources in the Coaching Collection at libraries in Lincolnshire.

New books have been added to the collection which are free for sports clubs, organisations and individuals to borrow, and although the stock currently sits in the Lincoln Central Library, it can be transported to any library within the county on request.

Lizzie Couling, Workforce Development Manager at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “Resources can be costly so the Coaching Collection enables clubs and individuals to borrow the books and resources for free from any library in the county. In conjunction with our new volunteer programme, Sport Makers, the resources are a great tool to engage new volunteers with your club.”

Books added to the collection include Running Sports ‘Recruiting volunteers from outside your club’, Running Sports Top Tips, Running Sports ‘Valuing your Volunteers’ and Running Sports ‘Managing People’.

Less than two months left to apply for funding

Sports clubs, leisure centres and sports organisations have less than two months to apply for Sportivate funding in Lincolnshire.

Over 110 projects have received over £70,000 funding since July 2011 allowing clubs and organisations to offer sports sessions for children and young people across the county.

People are being encouraged to apply again for funding for the second year of the programme which will start in July 2012, focusing on projects which target minority groups such as women and girls and disability sport.

Lucy Blakey, Children and Young People’s Officer at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “Nearly £400,000 is available for sports projects in Lincolnshire to encourage semi-sport” teenagers and young adults to take part in sport over the next four years. It’s a great opportunity to encourage young people to get involved in sport but also provides a huge financial incentive for sports clubs, schools, leisure facilities and others, to deliver more sport across Lincolnshire.

The deadline to apply for the first block of second year funding (July to September 2012) is Friday 20th January 2012.

South Lincs 2012 project receives funding

An organisation in South Lincolnshire has received a grant to fund an Olympic and Paralympic inspired project.

The University of the Third Age (U3A) has been awarded £120 to run an Olympic Swimming Gala for its members in Bourne, Deepings, Grantham, Sleaford, Spalding and Stamford. The funding will pay for hire of the swimming pool and members will be able to take part in the gala in April 2012.

The event is part of a range of activities organised by the U3A taking place across the region next year. The swimming gala will culminate in an East Midlands swimming final in September 2012.

The money has been funded through a Lincolnshire Sports Partnership project called Silver Spirit, which awards grants of up to £300 to community groups and organisations whose members are mostly aged over 50 years, and want to run Olympic and Paralympic inspired projects in the run up to the 2012 Games.

Sarah Ferneyhough, Physical Activity Manager at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said:
“Silver Spirit provides a great opportunity for the older generation to get actively involved with the 2012 Games and run events and projects inspired by the Olympics or Paralympics. We were delighted to offer funding to the U3A in Lincolnshire and three branches of the organisation have been offered funding to develop the Swimming Gala next year.”

Cllr Sue Woolley, Executive Councillor for Health, Housing & Community, at Lincolnshire County Council said:
“The London 2012 Games is an excellent opportunity to inspire more people to get out and get active. Staying active is essential to maintaining health and fitness, particularly for the over 50s. That’s why I’m delighted this money has been made available to help older members of our communities celebrate next year’s games in a fit and fun way. Make sure you get involved in what’s happening in your area.”

Over £5000 has been awarded to 27 projects throughout Lincolnshire since the programme was launched in June 2011, but £10,000 is available in the run-up to the 2012 Games, so more projects in the county can be funded.

Groups can apply for funding for one off activities, or ask for support to pay for a series of sessions or longer term project that could last all year. The next deadline for Silver Spirit applications is 31st January, and all the money must be spent by September 2012.

Silver Spirit is funded and managed by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership.

An application form is available online at www.lincolnshiresports.com, or call Sarah Ferneyhough on 01522 585 580 for more information.

Make sport happen in Lincolnshire

Five-time Olympic Gold medallist, Sir Steve Redgrave, today unveiled a new way for people to become sporting heroes in Lincolnshire.

Sir Steve, has joined forces with Sport England and Lincolnshire Sports Partnership to launch Sport Makers, a programme for everyone who’d like to make sport happen for their friends, neighbours or colleagues.

Sir Steve said: “You don’t need medals to become a sporting hero. By helping people you know to get involved in sport you’ll be doing something amazing for your friends and local community as well as having fun yourself.

“The thing I want to see more than anything is more people out enjoying what sport has to offer, but we need your help to make it happen. So why not take your first step to becoming a sporting hero and visit www.sportmakers.co.uk.”

Sport Makers aims to inspire 548 people in Lincolnshire to get involved, with each of them spending at least 10 hours organising or leading sporting activities. It is open to anyone aged 16 and over.

Every Sport Maker will be invited to an informal and interactive workshop where they’ll gain the skills and opportunities to get involved in sport in Lincolnshire. Sport Makers will be introduced to organisations that need their help, and join forces with others who want to make sport happen locally. There’ll also be opportunities to meet top athletes and plenty of incentives to stay involved.

Lizzie Couling, Workforce Development Manager at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games hope to inspire people across the country to get involved with sport – but that doesn’t have to be through active participation. Sport Makers is all about making sport happen by organising an event, encouraging friends and family to be active and spending time within the local community. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in Lincolnshire, and I hope lots of people across the county will become Sport Makers.”

Today’s launch was welcomed by the Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson MP. He said:
“The volunteers that help out at local sports clubs up and down the country are the foundations of community sport. The new Sport Makers initiative is a key part of the London 2012 sports legacy and will help community sports clubs across the country get more people playing sport.”

Over 50% of adults in England say they’d like to play more sport[1], but many people don’t feel they have the time, money or confidence to get involved in a formal setting.

Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said:
“This is a great chance to get involved in making sport happen in Lincolnshire, whether that’s planning the route, finding the pitch or encouraging others to take part. So if you think you could help, or have your own ideas for getting others involved in sport, please join in as a Sport Maker and become part of the legacy of the London 2012 Games.”

Sport Makers is part of the Places People Play legacy programme that is bringing the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games into communities across the country.

To sign up, or for more information, visit www.sportmakers.co.uk.

£45,000 given to sports clubs in Lincolnshire

Almost £45,000 has been allocated to sports clubs and organisations in Lincolnshire.

76 sports projects in the county have received funding to deliver sports to young people aged 14 to 25 over the next six months, thanks to National Lottery funding through the Sportivate programme.

Sportivate is a national programme encouraging ‘semi-sporty’ teenagers to take part in six weeks sports sessions. It will run for four years from July 2011 until May 2015, and will distribute almost £400,000 of funding to sports clubs in Lincolnshire during that time.

Lucy Blakey, Children and Young People’s Officer at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “Sportivate not only provides a great opportunity to encourage young people to get involved in sport; it provides a huge financial incentive for sports clubs, schools, leisure facilities and others, to deliver more sport across Lincolnshire. It is great to see so many different projects applying for funding to encourage young people to take part in sport”.

£44,815 will be allocated to a variety of sports projects which will take place between October 2011 and March 2012.

Ranging from Basketball in Boston to Lacrosse in Lincoln, there’s something for everyone with 22 different sports on offer at 37 different locations in all seven districts.

Projects include Rugby Union, Cricket, Dance, Football, Rowing, Squash, Hockey, Climbing, Golf, Badminton, Cycling, Boxing, Swimming, Triathlon, Rounders, Orienteering and more.

Lucy said: “We have been overwhelmed by the number of applications for sports club funding through Sportivate, and are delighted to have allocated almost £70,000 over the first year. Over £40,000 has been given to projects starting next month, and we’re looking forward to seeing more people taking part in sport as a result.”

The overall aim of Sportivate is for 300,000 participants to take part in sport in Lincolnshire over the four years. It is hoped that 120,000 of those will continue to play sport regularly.

To find out more about Sportivate, visit www.lincolnshiresports.com/sportivate.

Aspiring photographers in Lincolnshire are encouraged to take part in an Olympic inspired sports competition.

The Olympic and Paralympic Values Photography Competition has been launched today (Thursday 8th September 2011) to celebrate International Paralympic Day.

The competition will have seven categories, reflective of the seven Olympic and Paralympic values of Respect, Excellence, Friendship, Courage, Determination, Inspiration and Equality.

Amateur photographers are encouraged to submit sporting photographs representative of an Olympic or Paralympic value before the closing date of 31st December 2011. There will be two categories for two age groups; under 16 years and over 16 years.

The competition has been developed by Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, Lincolnshire One Venues and Ruddocks printers.

Janet Inman, Chief Executive of Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said:
“We are very keen to not only promote the sporting legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, but also the cultural legacy. This competition celebrates the Olympic and Paralympic values through photography, and is specifically aimed at those who perhaps don’t play sport, but are involved in sport and activity in other capacities. I hope amateur photographers in Lincolnshire take the opportunity to be involved in an Olympic inspired project and submit their photographs.”

Following the deadline, a panel of expert judges including professional photographer and GB Sitting Volleyball Player Andrew Skinner, will shortlist seven winners from each District for the seven categories. The winners will be revealed on Saturday 11th February at seven Lincolnshire One Venues across the county; one in each district.
